Ai Suzuki

Ai Suzuki paints kanji characters between the new moon and the full moon, encouraging the viewers not just to read but appreciate and feel them. Since she was young, she loved to daydream. Whenever she saw a beautiful sky, flower, bird, or little bug, she come up with a simple story about it to amuse herself. She also enjoyed recalling the strange landscapes she encountered in her dreams. Things are no different for her today. Her creative work, which mainly involves stylized use of the calligraphy brush, expresses the shapeless images of her imagination and the thoughts and feelings we can’t see. Having established her creative style, she has been proactively exhibiting her work worldwide since 2003.
Finding her aesthetic in the lines that Toyohashi Brush, a traditional craftwork from her hometown, creates in one stroke, she carefully draws a line focusing all her senses on it. All the objects and incidents that sway her heart, including the beauty of nature, music that echoes in our hearts, and dynamic motions of athletes become a drive for her to create. It will be an immense pleasure for her if the piece she makes resonates with others’ hearts, thus becoming the one that brings comfort, joy, and happiness by their side. Compared to the vibrant, dynamic pictographs created 3300 years ago, the simplified kanjis used in modern Japan feel inorganic. Ai Suzuki, however, chooses to employ inorganic, modern-day kanji and wishes for its revitalization by drawing it wholeheartedly in her own ways.
In 2011, she got deeply in shock watching the news coverage of the Great Earthquake of Tohoku, which made her unable to create. She held her brush and tried to draw but always ended up in tears. Her heart was dying of thirst. Those days came to an end when waves of inspiration struck her suddenly, thus leading her to complete a considerable amount of work in a short time. That miraculous day turned out to be the new moon. Considering how they affect the pregnancy cycle, it all made sense to her that her timing to create was written on the calendar of nature. She mainly uses a Toyohashi brush (made from animal hair), ink (an ash composite made from burning oil and pine together), inkstone (made of rock), and paper (made from plants), all of which are made out of natural materials and thus uncontrollable by our hands. Having learned that, she follows other natural rhythms in her schedule, working only during the two weeks between a new moon and a full moon.
She has done solo exhibitions at TEOHA MILANO (Milan/ITALY) in 2018, Ouchi Gallery (NY, USA), and ITCHIKU KUBOTA ART MUSEUM (Kawaguchiko/JAPAN) in 2016, Omotesando Hills Gallery80 (Omotesando/JAPAN) in 2012, and more venues.

鈴木愛は新月から満月のあいだに「読むのではなく感じてほしい」という想いで文字を描く。小さな頃から空想が大好きで、美しい空・花・鳥・小さな虫を見て様々なイメージを膨らませ簡単なお話を作って遊んだり、眠っている時に見た不思議な夢の世界を思い出しては楽しんでいた。 それは大人になった今も変わらず、頭の中でイメージした形のないもの・目には見えない思いを表現するために、2003年から筆文字を用いた創作活動を行い、世界各国での個展にチャレンジする。
彼女は地元の伝統工芸品「豊橋筆」で描く一筆書きの線に美学を見出し、全神経を一本の線に集中させながら描く。 自然が見せる美しさ・心に響く音楽・アスリートが躍動する姿などから受けるすべての感動を原動力に作品を生み出している。そしてその作品が誰かの心に響き、その方の傍で癒し・楽しさ・幸せを届けることができれば最高だと思っている。3300年前に生まれた象形文字はイキイキと躍動しているように感じるが、現代の日本で使われている漢字は省略化されて無機質なものに感じる。しかし鈴木愛は、敢えて無機質な現代の漢字を使い、自らのイメージで形をデザイン化し、魂を込めて描くことで再び命が宿る文字に生まれ変わらせることを願っている。
2011年東日本大震災の報道を見てショックを受け、作品が全く描けなくなった経験がある。毎日創作に向かうものの涙が出てくるばかりで心が枯れてしまったかのようだった。ところがある日を境に次々とインスピレーションが湧き、いくつもの作品を一気に完成させた。不思議に思い暦を調べてみるとその日は新月だった。新月や満月は出産に関連していることから、作品を生み出すべきタイミングは自然界のリズムで決まっているのだと腑に落ちた。さらに、道具となる筆（動物の毛）・墨（すすと膠）・硯（岩）・紙（楮などの植物）は全て自然の恵みで出来ており、コントロール出来る素材ではない為、自らが自然のリズムに合わせて作品を仕上げることを大切にしている。 アート作品を仕上げる期間は新月から満月の2週間。文字に魂を込めるため心と体がベストな日に作品を完成させている。
